Butch and Sunny have to be on the same page because they were inseparable,
and often seemed to be one dog in two bodies. I went to the animal shelter
to look for an older shepherd-type dog; but, when I met these two guys, I
immediately knew that the search was over. I initially named them Bonnie &
Clyde; but, when the vet informed me that Bonnie was a male ( dumb me - I
never "looked" ), Bonnie became Sundance, and Clyde became Butch.
They were great friends to me and just about everyone else ( the only people
they didn't seem to like were Jehovah's Witnesses - that was the first and
only time I ever saw the hair on their necks literally "bristle"
- but the visitors got in their car pretty fast, and it didn't cost me too
much to fix the screen door ). They were quite territorial as far as other
dogs were concerned. The only exception was when two stray ( domesticated
) wolves came to visit. I tried to get Butch & Sunny inside, but they
would have none of that. To my amazement, the only posturing on either side
was submissive and it was all fun and games.
They weren't without their problems. Butch was epileptic ( on phenobarbitol
almost his entire life ), and Sunny had hip dysplasia and arthritis by the
time he was 6 ( Rimadyl helped with that ). After almost full recovery from
a stroke, Sunny succombed to kidney failure about 6 months later ( he almost
made it to 13 years old ). Butch made a miraculous recovery from Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus
( aka "bloat" ) , only to succomb to lymphoma about 2 months later
( he almost made it to 15 years old ).
They are both dearly missed; and, if this were paper, you could see my teardrops
on it as I write this.
